Final Piece

Rough Planning

The two ideas I have done further research into are the one's involving the idea of there being two 11th hours in a day and the idea of people making wishes when they see 11:11 on a clock. I looked at the book London Sketchbook by Jason Brooks and how he portrays the city of London and what he found from exploring in terms of atmosphere. He has thoroughly explored the ins and outs of the city so that he could portray this in the book and in some written parts. I took this to see and compare the two different 11 o'clocks we encounter daily.
I chose to use the two pages of my layout as separate pieces rather than one larger piece as the break up between the two times is what I want to show. I thought the underground would be a good location to portray this as there's a dramatic change in tempo depending on the 11th hour. I focused on the different things I've seen in the 11am hour. I created patterns based around these observations such as the clothes people wear, accessories and technology. The other side of the piece will then portray the contrast of the slow pace and lack of crowds.
My research for the second idea began with the idea of people making a wish when they see 11:11 on a clock. The occurrence of seeing 11 11 anywhere is seen to be significant and a positive thing. '11:11 is also a sign that our Twin Flame is or will be manifesting themselves in our lives.' I went on to find that a Twin Flame is a person that compliments another rather than completes them. I took the idea of complimentary things and things that match and created compositions around this. My ideas involved the suits on playing cards, foods and drink, heartbeats, colours, night and day, light and dark etc.
I have compiled some of these ideas based around the Twin Flame idea into a few different compositions. I shall now choose two compositions, one for each idea, and create some final roughs which I shall present so that a discussion can be had to choose which one works best and which I shall create as a final piece for the Olio publication.
Research

I have looked into Jason Brook's book London Sketchbook and how he has explored the city and what he has discovered about it.
He observed the people in the city which is what i'd like to look at too as they are a big part in creating the atmosphere. My idea is based around the fact that there are two 11 o'clocks in a single day. I have done some drawings of my time in London so that I could build a better understanding of the pace and lifestyle based around whichever 11th hour it may be.
I want to create pattern based around my findings to create the busy atmosphere that revolves around the first 11th hour of the day.
I explored my second idea of the fact that people make a wish when they see 11:11 on a clock. My research took me to find that seeing 11 11 anywhere is significant and a positive thing. I went on to find that 11 11 can represent a Twin Flame. This being 2 people that compliment each other rather than complete one another. I took this and explored the idea more metaphorically and looked at the inanimate and what we see as things that go together well. Theme Discussion Seminar

As a group we discussed the ideas that revolved around our theme The Eleventh Hour. We found a lot of the ideas catered towards something happening in the last moments of life. One area of this I find to be interesting is the natural disasters. I will therefore be thinking further into this idea to see what I can discover. Another idea I have had is more to do with time, and the fact that there are two 11 o'clocks in the day. The a.m and the p.m. It's the idea of what happens in each of these times and how they may contrast. I would also like to look at the idea of making a wish at 11:11 and if this means anything more. I shall therefore be doing more research based around this.
My brief specifies that I should have two completely different ideas to present. I shall therefore be using two mentioned and creating thumbnails around them. I like the idea of creating a typographic piece so using the natural disaster idea could be how I do this and then my idea to do with time can be a more visual piece. I will therefore be doing more research and going further into these initial ideas to create the thumbnails and then roughs to present.
One Day Brief 3

The third and final brief I had was a choice of five different ones. I chose the first that involved a theme of London and illustrated a chosen area or areas. I had to explore the places and spaces of London. I am very interested in this them in general as I have done many projects based around London already so I found this to be a good use of the observations I had already made from being in this location. I chose to illustrate one of my favourite places in London, Carnaby Street. It is known for its iconic fashion, food and entertainment. I chose to focus on the fashion side of this area as this is what brings me back to it and Carnaby Street is an iconic area of London.
The brief involved working to a larger scale which I haven't done before so having this challenge to create a suitable composition was interesting to take on. I had to consider the dpi I used so that if it was to printed to the large size the brief specified, it would be of a suitable quality. I chose red, white and blue and made sure to include some indication of London Transport as the brief is catered towards the London Transport Museum.
I think my design process was much more successful as I took from what my last brief and improved on this. I designed the individual elements to go in the piece and then experimented on photoshop with different compositions. In terms of a professional process I feel this way is more viable as I can therefore show my client the designs I have done and then the compositions so then a consistency is followed through with the whole process of design to outcome. I can therefore take this onto my process for designing my page for Olio.
One Day Brief 2

This weeks brief consisted of choosing one of the stories and its synopsis and creating a book cover around it. I chose something that maybe wouldn't have been my first choice. One choice was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which involves food and I used this last week so I wanted another challenge. I therefore chose Perfume by Patrick Suskind. After reading the plot of the story I created rough compositional sketches. I wanted the idea of the 5 senses to be present but having smell as the most prominent.
In terms of my design process I once again changed the composition after I had drawn my roughs. I will therefore be changing the way I work next time. I will draw the elements I wish to be involved in the final piece, draw roughs and then play around with the compositions on Photoshop. I tend to have my ideas and draw my roughs and when it comes to bringing it all together it isn't how I want it to be. I will try and get this correct next time because in professional terms this wouldn't be viable as my client won't get what they were expecting. My timings however, have been much better this time as I have been able to complete everything within the deadline. I just need to bring this together with my design process to have a completely successful outcome.
One Day Brief 1

After being presented with an array of articles that were based around recipes, travel and news I chose to illustrate a recipe as I felt this would best help me when it comes to my FMP ideas. I had a criteria that I need to follow strictly as this was only a one day brief so I had to work quickly when it came to all parts of my design process and the production of the final piece.
I chose the first recipe of Baked Chocolate Truffle and Pernod Fig and this was the piece I created.
The idea of a completely typographic piece is quite appealing to me as I am exploring this area in other modules so this piece stood out to me. The colour combinations are successful along with the slight variations on the different fonts drawn. This makes me see the piece as a whole rather than just reading a quote. The quality of the outcome has clearly been done to a high standard which is the requirement when it comes to my brief. The bleed was considered as a border has been applied around the edge as an extra anyway so that when it came to trimming none of the illustration is lost.
Initially I thought the ratio of text to image was off as I thought there was too much text but after reading the passage it is well connected to the illustration and to the theme of the Olio. Once again the bleed of the image has been considered as an appropriate border has been left so as not to compromise the image. The colours don't come across very strong in print but I think this is because watercolour was probably used but if a CMYK mode was used then it would've been known that the colours would turn out this way in print. I prefer bolder, brighter colours and I think some of the defining black lines get lost in the midst of the colour so I shall keep this in mind as I would like to use bolder lines that are very defiant. The relation to the theme is an engaging concept which as a whole piece makes the type and image come together really well.
The very simple compositions of the two pages work very well with the neutral, earthy colours of the background as the images immediately take focal point. The small pops of colour and white stand out adding to the details of the image. The quality of the images are perhaps not at the highest but this could be to do with the fact that some of the colours are muted so don't pick up as clearly in print. However, the marks made on the left page in the background come across very successfully as the different tones and textures created can be well seen in print. The colours go right to the edge but a bleed looks like it was still considered as the illustrations are placed centrally and weren't compromised when it came to trimming.
All of the things I have analysed here will be things I shall need to take into consideration when it comes to my own piece and meeting my brief requirements.

Final Piece

After presenting my two final roughs we decided that the London themed was the best one for me to produce as my final piece. It involves more pattern and a subject matter that I am more interested so I was more invested in this idea. I did change it around slightly with the pattern on the left page. I created a separate piece with just the pattern on and then placed it behind all the layers on the left page as I wanted this page to be busier than on my rough.
I created all of this on photoshop after individually drawing the separate elements as I found this to be the best way for me to work after doing the one day briefs. I had a couple of variations of the final piece which I had peers look at and suggest what would be best and this is what I have produced as my final piece.
I created the final piece as a TIFF file and put it into inDesign so I could make the correct file for it to go to print.
As a whole module I thought the way in which my brief was approached was something I definitely want to continue to do. I liked having a theme and then exploring the possible ideas around it. I felt that I was able to produce ideas and different compositions fairly quickly which I did quite enjoy as I'd prefer not to prolong this process. It was after this however, that my timings were not as good as I wanted them to be. I was experimenting with different ways of presenting the individual pieces of the illustration so I could bring them together at the end. This took longer than I expected so when it came to editing the final piece and composition I was already behind. I will definitely improve when I comes to the next brief as the deadlines are just as important as the piece itself especially in terms of being professional with all aspects.
Another improvement would be that my design process needs to reflect in my final piece. I tried some different compositions but when I edited the piece I went with a completely different composition. I will need to think out these things more clearly on the next one so that if I was to present to a client my ideas and the final outcome correlate and there would be no confusion.
Timing, compostions and having a clearer design process will be my focus of attention next time so that my ideas and outcome correlate with each other and I can then make the deadline.
Previous Olio Research

I have looked at some pieces from previously made Olio's and seen how they have worked in the publication. I will see if the brief has been met to a certain extent in terms of the dimensions and the response to the given theme.
