Evaluation of Module
_______________________________________________________________
I felt that this module has been extremely useful to me and my professional take on my practice. Using the tutorials to gain constructive feedback has helped to drive my ideas further allowing me to finalise on something I am very much looking forward to producing. I enjoyed creating the pitch as it allowed me to be more focused on my ideas and think more in-depth about exactly what it is I want to be doing.
Although I changed my original pitch idea, I felt that I portrayed my ideas and the direction I wish to go successfully as I was able to talk with the tutors about the ideas I had and communicate them to allow for my final pitch idea to be resolved. Having them understand exactly what it is I am interested in producing made me realise more what it is I want to do and where I can apply my work when it comes to a viable career after my FMP. I feel I can now create this kind of material and produce pitches in a more successful way as I have all my thoughts, ideas and the the route I wish to take pinpointed.
Speaking about my final pitch with an audience and having questions asked has been an invaluable professional experience for me which I can now take from and put into practice in the future.
Finalised Pitch Outline

Final Pitch
_______________________________________________________________
After presenting my final pitch I have come away with more ideas that are more viable for me to take. Originally I was going to use dated brands and make them contemporary so that they are more engaging for a new and old audience. I also wanted to use the illustrations I create for these and apply them to other products that aren't necessarily involving the brands name or logo. This is where my ideas changed and was given feedback from my pitch. I will now be using headers at supermarkets and creating illustrations for them. The aisles at supermarkets are labelled with what is stocked on the aisle. I will be taking these and creating typographic pieces along with illustrations to make them aesthetically engaging to supermarket goers. I can then gone on to apply these illustration to the bags used at the supermarkets and the trolley bays outside. Thinking more in-depth about the project my work could then be applied to the in house branded foods of the supermarket. As I am very focused on typography and ink use I feel this will be a much more suitable platform for me to apply my illustrations to.
I will still be looking at the same reference points as they are still relatable to my project. I will be going through these in detail in my finalised pitch outline.
I feel this criticism was invaluable to the next process of my project as I am now really focusing on the things I find interesting and exciting to work with.
Mock Pitch
_______________________________________________________________
Taking all of the previous feedback into consideration I created my pitch around these thoughts and my own ideas. I used visuals in a slideshow whilst explaining what it is exactly I am planning to do. I will talk more in depth about my plans and ideas when I have presented my final pitch.
I felt that my visuals helped my audience and drove my presentation forwards. An interest in my references was taken and some more were given to me to look at, which I shall do in prep. for my final pitch.
The suggestion of producing a timeline of how I will manage my time from pitch to outcome was made as I could made it very clear the process I will be going through to produce my final pieces.
I still wasn't sure what it is I will be producing as the final pieces so this is something i will consider in the next week and come to a finalised idea for it so that I know exactly what I will be getting at the end of the project. I will now cater my pitch with this improvements in mind in the next week so that i can finalise all my ideas and presentation.
Synopsis and Peer Review
_______________________________________________________________
So that I could have a clearer outlook for my FMP ideas I filled out a visual chart where all the parts the process of my FMP is broken down and I can explore them in a bit more depth.
This was a helpful tool to use as I could really figure out exactly what is I'm going to be doing, who I'm going to be looking at and how I will do it. I then went through my ideas with a peer so that they could too, gain an understanding of what it is I am going to be doing and then I could a review to work through and help me when it comes to my actual pitch.
They thought that my ideas were well structured and that it was an interesting brief as I am bringing back what is gone and making it contemporary. I showed them the artists I am going to be looking out when experimenting and explained how I will taking on their techniques and how I will adapt to incorporate into my own work. They felt the work I had already created wasn't in tone with the artists I had chosen however, I am still to begin my own experiments and more in-depth research before I begin incorporating these elements which I think I should've made clearer.
I will be taking all of these points into consideration the preparation of my pitch so that I can be as informative as possible when portraying my plans and ideas.
Further FMP Ideas
_______________________________________________________________
Developing further from my initial tutorial I have taken my ideas further. Initially I wanted to combine typography with illustration of the inanimate but I didn't have an anchoring theme. I thought that illustrating food would be an interesting direction to take as I have also been exploring this area during the summer as I took an interest in it. I thought that I could use an existing brand such as a coffee shop or a higher end food shop and create a brief as if the brand was my client. I decided I didn't want to use a brand that was current as I felt it could limit the outcome I produced in terms of being able to make it contemporary and I want to make my work relevant. I therefore asked a few different people if there were any sweets, drinks, snacks and cereals that they had when they were younger that are no longer sold or are dated. I came back with lots of useful information which has led me to use these dated brands, which I will explore more further into my design process, and redesign/ illustrate them to make them contemporary. I will now be going on to find references that use materials or techniques I find interesting and that could help drive my experimental process.

Finalised Pitch Outline

Aisle headers in supermarkets are my
main focal point when it comes to my FMP. I shall be illustrating the
individual headers of these aisles to make them a more appealing and exciting
prospect for the customers of these supermarkets who would essentially be
second party clients of mine with the actual supermarket being the initial
client. I can therefore go on to apply my designs and illustrations to other
aspects of the supermarket such as their carrier bags, the trolley bays in the
car parks, any in house branded packaging that they may carry and shop fronts.
My work involves the heavy use of inks
and typographic elements, which are what I like to focus on so applying this,
will be an exciting prospect for me to explore further. My reference points
involve uses of both of these things.
Marion Deuchars uses typography as the main anchoring element in her work. I shall therefore be looking at her blog and her creative processes to create the typography. I can then experiment myself and see if I can use any of these techniques within my own practice.

David Downton creates very simplistic
compositions whilst using ink, which as stated is what I focus on using. I
shall be looking at trying out these kinds of compositions as I enjoy trying out
new compositional ideas and it may help me, as I will be working with a limited
canvas to apply my designs.
Blacklist Studio are renowned for their
typography and I love their use of textures with the words to create a
simplistic but well put together outcome. I shall also be trying out these
textural qualities that may work as stand alone typography piece and no
illustrations.
Yasmeen Ismail uses watercolours with
no strong defined edges. Her compositions are what I shall be looking at as I
am always using ink to create defined and expressive edges so this aspect doesn't correlate to my own practice. I can use these
compositional experiments to apply to all the different aspects of the supermarket
(e.g. carrier bags, in house branded packaging).
Finally I shall be investigating how
the aisle headers are already presented and what kind of canvas I will be
working with and how my own work is going to applicable to this platform. I can
continue this investigation onto the presentation of storefronts and the
carrier bags so that I can see how my designs will carry onto these areas of
the store.
I
shall begin my process with the research and experimentation of all of these
references allowing about 3 weeks per one. I shall take all of these
experiments into consideration and develop them further along with the kind of
work I already create so as not to lose the style I work with. I will then have
2-3 weeks considering compositions, based on the different applications of the
illustrations (i.e the carrier bags or store fronts). The next couple of weeks
will involve creating finalized designs and then about 4 weeks to create the
final outcomes and applying them to the mentioned products.

Kickstarter
_______________________________________________________________
As preparation for my own pitch of my FMP, I went to Kickstarter to watch and read existing pitches so I could gain my knowledge about how to go about creating one. I chose 2 pitches to analyse and take note on.
People I've Loved's Pressing Matters
'We are raising funds to make a great print shop to grow our business and host workshops and classes.'
Overall I would this pitch to be welcoming, friendly and informative. They clearly state what it is that they do and what it is they want to do next with their business. They both wish to gain enough money to go towards a new location for their print shop so they have more space to employ staff and grow the business. They show the space they exist in currently so the audience knows what they are dealing with and can see for themselves that they are in need of the larger space.
I did find that the idea sounded a little too scripted which I thought detracted from their enthusiasm so it wasn't, at times, fully engaging to me. They do however, make it very apparent what their needs and goals are and reinforce their ideas with the visuals making me more interested.
Alongside the visual pitch they have a written one too. I felt this one had more information and details in that cold help inform my decision further so was definitely needed with the video.
Around the World in 80 Days- with Street View Sketches
by Lehel Kovacs
An immediate sense of the style of work being produced is present to me so I know exactly what it is I'm working with. The video side to the pitch isn't what I expected it to be. It shows only the work in a small animation. The tone of the video is very fitting for the subject matter with the music and visuals coming together to show this.
Once again there is written information to go with the video which in this case is necessary as it provides all the vital information about the project.
A brief background of the inspiration behind the project is given allowing me to see further behind the outcome which I think when pitching can be very important as it can help further the clients interest.
The risks of the project are suggested so that the client knows exactly what it is they are getting themselves into. The main goals of this pitch is to say that a better quality of work is to be produced with the given money and more personalised work too. The added personalisation is something worth mentioning as I think a client is always looking for that unique experience that they will want to go back for.
In terms of my own pitch I think these two pitches have helped in some ways. I need to be explain clearly and simply exactly what it is I am wanting to achieve and how I will go about doing this. Communicating clearly with a client and showing your enthusiasm is imperative to being successful with the pitch so that they can reciprocate with either hiring me.
If there are any worries or problems I think I may encounter I should make sure I have thought everything through so that I can state how I shall overcome these to still produce the best outcome. I shall be creating exciting and useful visuals for my pitch that are all relevant to the process I will take. Whether this be work Ive already created so a sense of the style of work to be produced is shown, some research points that I will investigate to correlate with the experiments, the overall aim of the project and what it is exactly that I wish to produce.
Initial FMP Ideas
_______________________________________________________________
Over the summer I have created a few typography based piece with illustrations to correlate. I would therefore like to take this forwards and create something more with it. The following work is the kind of thing I want to be developing from.
I like the idea of combining the text with an image so I want to turn this into something viable and professional. I also like illustrating inanimate objects so combining with some text that perhaps isn't expected would an interesting theme to experiment with. A universal theme for this project is something I am going to have to finalise next so that I can translate my ideas clearly when it comes to my pitch.
Within the next 3 weeks I will delve into the possible theme I can follow and research so I can have more depth to my project as a whole and then begin to find my references so I can begin researching after my pitch.
Initial Thoughts
_______________________________________________________________
When I have finalised my FMP ideas and gain more knowledge on the theme and subject I am going to be focusing on, I feel this module will be invaluable to me in developing my professional outlook and outcome to my practice. The feedback I get from my mock presentation will be something I can then take forwards into the real pitch and then onto my professional illustration career. I can develop my planning process so that I have a clear and viable project to pursue and I am looking forward to doing this as I am always looking to improve the way I work as at the moment my design process doesn't always match up to my final outcome so hopefully with this initial and well thought out planning I can follow it through with the rest of my FMP. With more research and idea development I fell that I will be able to deliver a confident, engaging and professional pitch. My next steps will be to take from my initial ideas and figure out the direction I want to go with them so I can have a solid idea to pitch and present.
